Breast Cancer Drugs May Increase Risk for Carpal Tunnel, Says Study

A certain combination of breast cancer drugs are believed to raise risk for carpal tunnel syndrome, according to new research. The two cancer drugs that have been linked to carpal tunnel are tamoxifen and exemestane.

Pain management Dallas specialists treat carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as other work related injuries. This condition affects wrist and hand tendons and can be used by repetitive motions on this part of the body, such as typing on a computer or using a computer mouse or working on an assembly line.

The study involved test results from 4,700 women in 37 countries. What researchers found is that women that took tamoxifen for two or years and then took exemestane were more likely to fight off further spread of their cancer and had a better chance of surviving.  A major side effect, however, of this medication combination was a high degree of musculoskeletal fragility.

This study was conducted by Leiden University Medical Centre in The Netherlands, Imperial College London and the Institute of Cancer Research and the study findings are published in the journal Lancet Oncology.

Symptoms of carpal syndrome include numbness or pain in the wrist, hands, or fingers, weakness in the hands or grasps and skin dryness. While it is inconvenient to our daily lives and work activities, this condition is treatable and not life threatening like cancer.

Pain clinic Dallas center commonly treats this condition through a combination of physical therapy and massage, prescription medication, injections, and manual therapy.

At least carpel tunnel is treatable by a pain clinic. I would say that this is a small tradeoff for having a good cancer treatment. Great article!
